AFWWA PLACEMENT SERVICES

Introduction: Light at the end of a tunnel when all seems lost, a ray of hope in the darkness of despair, a shoulder to weep on, a sympathetic ear to listen to problems, a helping hand held out in times of need. Air Force Wives Welfare Association(AFWWA) is all of this and more, an organisation run by the wives of serving personnel of the Indian Air Force. The Indian Air Force operates from various Air bases located over the entire length and breadth of our country. With its headquarters in New Delhi, the Association functions through seven Regional Branches located at Command Headquarters, who have local Branches at Air Force Stations and Units spread across bases at freezing altitudes of 15,000 ft and above in the Himalayas, to hot and sandy deserts of Rajasthan, the tropical forests of Assam and Islands of Andamans and Nicobar in the Bay of Bengal. The exposure that the Air Force personnel and their families receive with such diverse culture, weather, vegetation, land forms etc. can be rivalled by few Air Forces of the world. The challenges and hardships of Air Force personnel and their families makes their life purposeful and rewarding; and AFWWA - is always around to render assistance.

Background: The Air Force Wives Welfare Association was established on 28 October 1970 as a registered body. Starting with a humble beginning of seven members, AFWWA membership has grown exponentially and today it has nearly 1,70,000 members on its rolls. The Regional Branches are located at Shillong, Delhi Cantt, Allahabad, Nagpur, Bangalore, Trivandrum and Gandhinagar. They represent the intermediate stratum, while the local Branches function at the grass root level. The first lady of the Air Force (wife of Chief of the Air Staff) is the President of Central Organisation. The AFWWA Regional Branch is headed by the wife of Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief of respective Commands and local Branches are looked after by the wives of Base Commanders.

Activities and Benefits: Over the years AFWWA has grown both in stature and strength. It has kept its thrust to enhance the element of Welfare through a variety of innovative schemes, which are mentioned at AFWWA Schemes.

Medical Aid: AFWWA has donated medical equipment to various IAF Units. This has given great impetus to the improvement of Medical facilities available in the Medical Inspection Rooms/Hospitals. AFWWA has also contributed significantly towards improving the facilities in Labour Rooms and Dental Centres.

Conclusion: The statistics outline the work being done by AFWWA. For the wives of IAF personnel, life without AFWWA would be unthinkable. In stations away from big cities, AFWWA organises classes in Sewing, Typing, Computer and Beautician's Courses etc. to help ladies become self-sufficient. Adult Literacy classes, Baby shows, Blood Donation Camps, Family Planning Drives and Best Home/Garden Competitions are some of the other activities planned throughout the year. AFWWA endeavours to meet the aspiration of needy family through financial and medical assistance, and ensures that the guardians of our skies are not unduly worried on account of domestic issues, while serving the country.
